About Rock Your Socks

Every year on March 21, people all around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. March 21 is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks!

Together we will create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome in our schools, community, and around the world. 3/21, World Down Syndrome Day, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which is Down syndrome.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What size are the socks?  We offer two sizes: youth and adult. Adult socks typically fit most teens and adults, as well as older children. Youth socks are recommended for children around age 5 but are not suitable for toddlers or babies.

  • Why socks for Down syndrome?  Socks resemble chromosomes in shape, and individuals with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome.

  • Is Rock Your Socks a fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas?  Yes, Rock Your Socks serves as both an awareness campaign for Down syndrome and a fundraiser for our organization. Proceeds from this program help fund vital programs, outreach efforts, and initiatives that support our mission to serve individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

  • Is Dallas the only place with a Rock Your Socks campaign? There are several other Down syndrome organizations who run the Rock Your Socks program now. However, the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware started the program in 2014!
