The Down Syndrome Guild is pleased to introduce a new quarterly education program in 2024. Each half-day series will bring together local and national experts to help educate families on some of the most commonly asked questions at each life stage. This first series will focus on Planning for the Future.

Medicaid Waivers & SSI Overview

Elise will provide an overview of the Medicaid Waiver Programs (i.e. The Waiting Lists) available to support people with Down syndrome in Texas.  She will cover eligibility requirements, how to apply, what the waivers do, why they are important, and more. Elise will briefly speak on SSI resources in addition to the waiver programs.  Please note that this particular session will not cover Medicaid eligibility and/or loss of coverage.  If families have specific questions about Medicaid coverage, Elise has offered to answer questions after the presentation or help families contact Disability Rights Texas for an intake.

Special Needs Trusts 101

Tresi will provide a basic overview of government benefits and discuss how you can plan for your child's future with the use of wills, special needs trusts, and other legal documents.  This presentation helps you plan ahead so that your child will thrive, and you will have peace of mind that your child will be taken care of.

Guardianship 101

Rachel helps parents/caregivers understand what guardianship is, when it is needed, and less restrictive alternatives to guardianship. She will walk you through the guardianship process step by step so that you will be prepared.

Attendees may attend one or more sessions throughout the day, and boxed lunches will be available for pre-purchase at the time of registration. The Planning for the Future series is open to all age groups. Space is limited and registration is required by Wednesday, January 31 (or until the event is full). Questions? This series will be presented in-person only. Recording will not be available for any sessions offered in this series.
