The Down Syndrome Guild is pleased to introduce a new quarterly education program in 2024. Each half-day series will bring together local and national experts to help educate families on some of the most commonly asked questions at each life stage. This series will focus on School Age topics for ages 5 - 17.
Developing Meaningful IEP Goals (Bio)

Roy Atwood a trial lawyer with Atwood Gameros LLP with extensive experience in special education law will offer practical tips on how to recognize insufficient goals and provide attendees with the tools to develop meaningful goals for students of all ages. Participants will also be guided through an exercise taking a student’s present levels of performance, identifying subject matter goals based on those present levels, and then drafting sample goals that are both meaningful and measurable.

Positive Behavior Intervention

This workshop will help families understand the reason for behavioral assessments and positive interventions with a focus on behaviors that serve a specific purpose for a student. We will discuss using positive consequences versus punishment to change behavior, as well as what IDEA 2004 says concerning positive behavior interventions.
Attendees may attend one or more sessions throughout the day, and boxed lunches will be available for pre-purchase at the time of registration. The School Age Education Series is tailored for parents and caregivers of children aged 5-17 with Down syndrome.
